Shenyi (Chinese: 深衣; Wade–Giles: Shên-i) is the historical Chinese attire for men which is recorded in Book of Rites and advocated in Zhu Xi's Common Rites. It has been the informal dress since Shang Dynasty and was quite popular during Zhou dynasty and Han Dynasty. After Jin dynasty, Shenyi began to disappear. During Song Dynasty, Zhu Xi restored Shenyi based on his research and the shenyi at this time is called Zhuzi Shenyi(朱子深衣),which is quite different from Shenyi in the past. Mashan Shenyi Robe is a kind of Shenyi which is made based on the clothes evacuated from Mashan No. 1 Chu-state tomb. These clothes are classified into 3 types of Shenyi: N1, N10 and N15. N1, whose body length is relatively short(148 cm) is considered to be underclothes by researchers and N10 and N15 are considered to be outer clothing. |
